Ear fullness can be caused by infection, especially when accompanied by cold and flu-like symptoms. The feeling of fullness is the result a blocked Eustachian tube, which connects your ear to your throat and permits the drainage of fluid from your middle ear. If fluid builds up, the middle ear may become infected with bacteria or viruses, leading to pain and swelling. Hay fever and other allergies are also common causes of ear fullness.
Sudden, dramatic shifts in air pressure, such as those experienced when flying in an airplane or scuba diving, may cause fullness in the ear and even lead to rupture of your eardrum. This is known as barotrauma and occurs from extreme pressure differences between the inside of your ear and the outside.

You can easily get rid of clogged ears by performing the Valsalva maneuver. It will relieve stuffiness and pain in the ear. close your mouth and pinch your nostrils closed with your fingers, then take a deep breath. Blow air out of your nose to regulate the air pressure.
If done correctly, you will hear a slight popping sound which means the Eustachian tubes are open again. Note that you mustn’t blow your nose too hard as it may cause damage to the ear drum.
Sitting in the bathroom with a hot shower running for fifteen minutes or so also works for sinus pain.
To destroy any kind of bacterial infection that may be causing clogged ears, you can use a combination of alcohol and apple cider vinegar.
Here is the simple recipe that will help:
- Mix equal amounts of alcohol and apple cider vinegar.
- Lie down on your side and use a dropper to put a few drops of this mixture in the affected ear.
- To keep the mixture from spilling out, place a cotton ball in the ear and do not raise your head.
- Rest for five to ten minutes to allow the mixture to do its work.
- Remove the earwax with an ear bud.
- If the other ear is also clogged, repeat the process with the other ear.
- A warm compress is a very good natural treatment for clogged ears associated with colds or sinus congestion. The heat from a warm compress will help loosen congestion, unclog the ear and ease the pain. Soak a washcloth in warm water, wring out the excess water and then hold the washcloth over the affected ear for five to ten minutes. This will help to ease pain and promote fluid drainage. Alternatively, you can wrap a hot water bottle in a thin towel and apply it to the clogged ear for five to ten minutes to relieve the pressure and open up the clogged ear.
- Inhaling steam is one of the simplest ways to get rid of clogged ears resulting from a cold. The steam will help thin and loosen the mucus, which in turn will give you relief from clogged ears. Steam can also help loosen earwax causing clogging. Pour hot steaming water in a large bowl. Add a few drops of tea tree oil or lavender essential oil to it. cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam slowly until the clogged ear opens up. You can also take a hot shower for about ten minutes to relieve clogged ears.
- Flushing with warm water will also help open up a clogged ear. Fill an ear syringe with a cup of warm water. Tilt your head to the side as much as you can and pull your ear lobe down to open up the ear canal. Insert the tip of the syringe into the ear opening. Point the syringe slightly up and sideways and squeeze the bulb of the syringe to force the water into your ear canal. The gentle force of the water will dislodge the wax. Wait for about ten minutes and then tilt your head to the other side. The water and earwax will come out easily.
- You can also process your ears with a fan. You have to hold a fan turned on the high temperature in front of the affected ear twenty or thirty centimeters away from your ear. Note that you have to use only heated air, otherwise you can catch a cold or other infection. Do not hold the fan too close to ear if you do not want to get your ear burned. You should process an affected ear in this way for about five minutes.
- Take a cloth. Iron it or put it in the sunlight so that it gets warm. Now, put this warm cloth underneath the affected ear. This is a very good remedy for clogged ears. Else, heat some water and soak a cloth in it. Now, squeeze the excess water and keep the cloth on the affected ear for five minutes. Then, rub your affected ear with your palm, roughly. Now, put your palm on the clogged ear very tightly and then, push it out just like a suction cup. You will notice that your ear is unclogged.
This way of plugged ears healing is well enough when you have such medications by your hand. However, it is still necessary to identify to origin of your plugged ears. If it is an infection, you must take only those pills that are recommended by your doctor. Read through the instructions very carefully and mind the possible aftereffects. If you do not have an infection, you may use the specialized ear wax dissolving solution. Take a few drops of glycerine and baby oil and mix them in hot water.
Mix an equal amount of hydrogen peroxide in this solution. Lie down and pour a very little amount of wax softening solution in the affected ear. Once you pour the mixture in your clogged ear, you will hear the sounds of bubbles. When you stop hearing this sound, it means, it’s time to drain out the solution. You can try this solution for three times a day, but not more than that as hydrogen peroxide can harm your ear drums.
- Yawning is another easy way to deal with clogged ears. The act of yawning decreases air pressure in the ear and helps activate the muscles that open the Eustachian tubes. Open your mouth slightly and attempt to yawn until you feel a slight pop inside the air. Repeat if the first yawn did not bring relief or until you start hearing more clearly.
- Gargling with a hot salt water solution can help unclog the ears and also ease nasal congestion that may be contributing to the problem. Mix one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Gargle with this solution for fifteen to thirty seconds and spit it out. Do this repeatedly until you get relief from the clogged ear.
- If clogged ears are due to a sudden change in air pressure, like what happens during an airplane landing or take off, try chewing gum. This will open up your Eustachian tubes, relieving the excess pressure in your ears and opening up clogged ears.
If you have a red flag symptom, your plugged-up feeling is probably more than earwax. Dizziness, for example — the room-spinning sort that’s the main feature of true vertigo — points to a fluid imbalance in your inner ear. And ear pain, rather than a plugged-up feeling, can indicate a middle ear infection.
A moist discharge from your ear, along with pain, can indicate an infection in your outer ear. If you don’t have a red flag symptom, the problem may be earwax. In my opinion, only one home remedy for this is worth trying. Get a bottle of hydrogen peroxide at the drugstore. Soak a cotton ball with the hydrogen peroxide. Tilt your head and drip the peroxide into your ear.
You may hear it fizz as it tries to dissolve the earwax. After about thirty seconds, drain your ear onto a washcloth. If this helps, do it two to three more times. Above all, do not try to remove earwax yourself in any other way. cotton swabs and pencil erasers can break off in the ear canal, a passage that bends and narrows in spots. Let your doctor take a look before you start digging into the canal on your own.
Garlic essential oil. Garlic is a natural remedy for plugged ears. Take two garlic cloves and mash it with a knife or spoon. Now, heat a saucepan and put two spoons of olive oil in it and add the smashed garlic. Heat it for a few seconds. Now, turn off the flame and let it reach on a lukewarm level. Lie down and put this prepared garlic oil on the clogged ear. Let it set for like forty five seconds to one minute. After that, drain the garlic oil. You will feel relief.
Tea tree oil. Boil one glass of water. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to it. When the water starts to boil, put your affected ear on the steam. This will provide relief. Repeat, if necessary. It is an effective plugged ear treatment.
Put a few drops of lukewarm olive oil in the affected ear and let it settle for five minutes. Now, keep your head sideways and remove the oil or earwax with cotton. You can also use baby oil or mineral oil in place of olive oil.
Here are the most common methods of getting rid of plugged ears. You can use some of them in combination with others. However, these methods may not do well enough for everyone, as we are all different. Do not hesitate to change the methods and try new ones. We are sure that you will remove plugged ears in some time.
